Coach will be training himself while Down Under
May 24 2010 by Madeleine Brindley, Western Mail
WALES coach Warren Gatland will take time out of the forthcoming New Zealand tour to train for Kilimanjaro.
He and Wales skills coach Rob Howley hope to fit in a few treks while they are in New Zealand next month in preparation for the Brains SA Captains Climb.
Wales play Tests against the All Blacks on June 19 and 26.
Gatland and Howley are part of the 50-strong team, which includes 15 former Wales captains, who will attempt to reach the “roof of Africa” in September to raise £1m to boost lung cancer research.
All the money raised during the climb, which is the idea of photographer Huw Evans, will go to Velindre Cancer Centre’s Stepping Stones appeal.
Howley, a former Wales captain, said: “I’ve never been to New Zealand so I’m looking forward to joining Warren on a few walks – the countryside is supposed to be stunning, and will make a nice change from going up and down the big dipper in Merthyr Mawr sand dunes.”
Both Howley and Gatland have been kitted out by Cotswold Outdoor store, in Cardiff, which is supporting the Brains SA Captains Climb.
Store worker Mike Gauntlett, said: “Climbing Kilimanjaro is a significant challenge, and wearing the right clothing is essential, so we were delighted to fit out Warren and Rob and to be help to support the Captains Climb.”
Gatland added: “I didn’t realise quite how much kit we would need.”
