Reliable home-made fire-lighter

Product/Skill: General Outdoor Skills Interest: Camping
Standard firelighters work but smell and fall to bits in the rucsac, and the various tinder woods or char-cloth all get damp where I go wandering! I use cotton wool balls dunked in molten candle wax instead. Because they're covered with a waterproof and flammable layer they work even after submersion and will light from a firesteel. Melt the candlewax SLOWLY over a low flame in a small pan and dunk/roll the cotton wool balls around with a stick until fully coated - this is best done outdoors and DON'T overheat the wax! Take the wax-coated balls out and allow to cool. Split open and tease the inside fibres to light. Works every time.
