I'm taking the whole family up to the Lake District this summer; we'll be based in Kendal. First time I'll have been back that way since I was a teen. Does anyone have any fav' walks they'd like to recommend for a rather mixed bag of walkers?

Hi colourfulwords' Yes indeed - I absolutely love the area around Buttermere including the walk over haystacks & down into Ennerdale valley where you have great views up to Great Gable and Greenb Gable. You could start with a walk around Buttermere lake (see: http://www.walkingworld.com/results/walksummary.asp?id=173&method=eRes&direction=position) and then decide whether to head up to Haystacks depending on how your companions are feeling! Note that the ascent to Haystacks and descent to Ennerdale valley can be quite hard work for little legs...but the promise of a snack at Blacksail hut usually does it for my nephews! You could even arrange to stay in Blacksail Hut (http://www.yha.org.uk/find-accommodation/the-lake-district/hostels/Black-Sail/index.aspx) and then carry on the next day up the valley towards Great/Green Gable or back to Buttermere.
