Sarah scrambling in the Cairngorms puts the new TNF Summit Series to the test!
I’ve just returned to the Lakes after an AWESOME Cotswold Outdoor Training Academy in the beautiful Cairngorm Mountains in Scotland. Thank you Cotswold!
Not only did we get to stay 3 nights at the lovely Glenmore Lodge, where many of the world’s best Mountain Leaders and Guides worked hard for their qualifications, but we were joined by rep’s from The North Face who brought along some of their top kit from their new SUMMIT SERIES range to put to the test.
One thing that struck me is that out of all the brands Glenmore Lodge could have partnered with, they chose The North Face. So that alone tells me it has to be top quality gear, as those Guides face some tough conditions in the Cairngorms in winter. Once they recorded wind gusting up to 184mph before breaking the machine!
Weather-wise, we enjoyed a beautiful walk out in the hills on our first day, with warm bright sunshine and slightly cooler on the tops when we stopped for lunch. In contrast, the following day we scrambled up onto a ridge in the mist and cold drizzle with tolerable fresh winds. This of course was great for testing out TNF kit! On went my Redpoint Summit Series insulated jacket in colder conditions and when we stopped to eat. It kept me so toasty warm and it was great being able to put it on top of my shell jacket and not worry about it getting wet and losing heat due to the Primaloft fill. Very impressed! I also found the new Summit Series Point Five Gore Pro Shell Jacket very comfortable and super breathable; it performed well, it was functional (big pockets and adjustable helmet compatible hood) and was a good fit.
I also spent most of the second day scrambling in the TNF Hyvent trousers and was surprisingly impressed with how comfortable, windproof and breathable they were, not once were my legs cold despite the cool wind.
I already wear TNF clothing though I must say that the brand has gone up further in my estimations since testing it out and hearing such positive feedback from the Mountain Guides. Definitely recommend looking at the Summit Series range and also scrambling in the Cairngorms, it was such fun! It was my first time scrambling and I must confess that I did heaps of ‘rock-hugging’ on the ridge-line, freaked out on a few occasions when I looked into the misty drop, plus I got plenty of ‘points’ for using my knees on more than 10 occasions… but it was AMAZING!! I’ll certainly be looking into scrambling in the Lakes in the coming future and I’ll be taking my Summit Series kit with me :O)
