Hiya,

I'm pretty sure you can't get the maps direct from OS as they have to be SatMaps specific format to work in the unit. You can pop in to your local store and ask them to "Special Order" the map you require (terms and conditions apply - make sure you know exactly what you want as you won't be able to return it!). There are two options, you can get the whole of the East of Scotland on an SD card which will give you 1:50k maps and 1:25k maps the closer you zoom in (Rather expensive though). Alternatively if you are only covering a small area within the East of Scotland you can always buy the maps by county, the downside being you will have to swap over SD cards everytime you cross a county border! Below are some links to the SatMap website for the two types of map I mentioned. If in doubt pop into your local store and ask a member of staff. Also I would triple check the maps work in your device before purchasing as it can be an expensive mistake if they don't!

North East Scotland Premium (1:25k & 1:50k)

http://www.satmap.co.uk/ukstore/index.php?cPath=123_160_232

County Maps (1:25k)

http://www.satmap.co.uk/ukstore/index.php?cPath=123_160_81_100

:map

Hi Tigerlea,

We do not specialise in bikes, but I have just spoken to one of the ladies here who will be cycling from John O Groats to Lands End (starting this Saturday!) and she said that you could change your tyres to something a bit more "slick". She has been training on both a hybrid and a road bike for her challenge.

She says you need to spend as much time as possible riding your bike to build up your endurance - and don't forget to replenish your energy every hour by eating something!

Her most important advice to you was to enjoy your training and the challenge.

Anyway, we hope this helps and good luck!

Happy adventures,

The Team @ Cotswold Outdoor

Get your back measured by a member of staff for the best fit and try them with some weight in too! Personally I really like the Exos 46 (there is a 34L version too!) but it might not be durable enough for your needs. Happy pack hunting!

Without doubt the best campsite in the UK must surely be 'The Old Forge' on Knoydart.

It's remote ,expect an 18 mile hike in over Munros or a 7 mile sea crossing from Mallaig. With the UK's most remote mainland pub (Guiness Book of Records no less!) serving hugely tasty and fresh food from the area, it's definitely worth the effort. There's normally someone with a musical instrument of some description there too so you won't go short on entertainment, or take along your own!

The campsite itself is at long beach, just along the 'road' from the pub. It's overlooking the Atlantic on one side and the mountains of Knoydart on the other. While the facilities aren't hi tech (water supplied and compost toilets available) they are there and if the weather turns really nasty there's always the bunk house by the pub!

For more info check their website- http://www.theoldforge.co.uk/

:

...your sleeping mat!

Even in the height of Summer, don't believe that a tent and sleeping bag is all you need for a comfy night in the great outdoors! Sleeping Mats provide not only comfort, but insulation from the cold ground. They trap and hold a layer of dead (non-circulating) air between your body and the cold ground. Your body gradually warms this layer of dead air and it becomes an insulating barrier. So, whatever you do, don't forget your sleeping mat (belive me, I've done it!) :bang

I’ve used my ME Firefox Active Shell frequently over the last 8 months and I’m happy with the performance. I don’t use waterproofs unless it’s raining, (or as an alternative shell if I’ve forgotten to pack more appropriate equipment like a wind shirt), so my expectations of breathability are tempered by the fact that nothing really breathes when the air is saturated and I’m sweating. That said, for my regular bike ride home, 4 miles up hill and often in a solid Welsh downpour, it’s been a good performer slung over a Helly Lifa. The trim cut certainly helps heat loss, as do the underarm vents. To my knowledge a waterproof has not been invented that will safely over ride your body’s biological response to intense activity – it’s still possible you will get hot and sweaty in this jacket, but that’s not a reason to overlook it. Combined with a helly baselayer, pertex windshirt and a Primaloft jacket to sling over everything on a chilly stop – you’ve got your core layers covered for an active day out in average changeable British conditions.

Hi, could anyone recommend a junior rucksack with waist strap and preferably chest strap also? It only needs to be 10 litres or so but all the childrens' rucksacks I've so far seen only have shoulder straps. My 8 year old is doing a 9 mile challenge with cubs and she needs something up to the job!

Stiffness in boots is caused by two main design aspects. The material the boots upper is made of and the sole design.

In your case the stiffness you are describing is down to the stiffness in the sole of the boot. The stiffness will come from either the rubber sole unit itself or a fibreglass plate built into the sole to give the boot a stable and controlled feel. Because it is a physical unit that cannot be removed the stiffness will remain as this was the intended design of the manufacturer.

The upper fabric of the boot will give (the amount of which will depend upon its material) as the boots are broken in. The reduced residence as a boot is broken in usually lessens the amount of heel lift that occurs.

Heel is a product of less support in the boot. If the boot is laced loosely then it is more likely to happen. The ankle cuff plays a very important role in preventing heel lift as it is this that holds the whole foot down when you are walking. Be sure that your boots are firmly tightened so that this does not happen.

If you are still having problems I would recommend taking your boots back to the store you bought them from to be assessed by a member of staff so that the problem can be resolved.

There may be ticks (sheep or deer ticks) in the Cotswolds in May and there is always a small chance that they carry Lyme disease, so it is worth taking precautions if you expect to be walking through long grass. You can also get yourself a tick card from one of our Cotswold Outdoor stores when you arrive - this ensures that ticks can be removed safely and easily to avoid infections. Hope this helps and let us know if you need any more advice!

Happy Adventures

The team @ Cotswold Outdoor

In the northeastern U.S. where I live, a springtime ramble through grassy fields and wooded areas in the countryside means watching out for deer ticks, bearers of the bacterium that causes Lyme disease. What's the situation vis-à-vis insect-borne nasties in the U.K.?

Hi Estel!

We have asked our Senior Buyer, Pete what he thinks and this is his reply:
"Unfortunately, not all of the fabric manufacturers, such as Gore-Tex publish hydrostatic head figures. The legal minimum is 1,500mm.
But if you are kneeling in water or sitting down having a sandwich on wet ground or scrambling & pressing on the jacket then you probably need 5,000-8,000mm.
To complicate matters further, each fabric depends on the lining & the face fabric so Gore-Tex depends on whether it’s 2 layer or 3 layer-3 layer is tougher but 2 layer is more breathable as a generalisation.
The new Gore-Tex Active Shell, Event from Rab or Polartec Neoshell have been the fabrics that have impressed me the most. I’ve tested these myself by running in them & by ice-climbing in them.
There is a trade-off between the thinner more breathable membranes, like Gore-Tex Active Shell & durability however. I destroyed a Paclite jackets in 2 big Alpine trips when the granite rock face wore through the carbon lining on the membrane.
My suggestions if durability is an issue is the Rab Neoshell jacket or a Mountain Equipment Morpheus(3 layer Gore-Tex Pro Shell) Jacket. Jack Wolfskin Texapore & The North Face Hyvent fabrics are good value for money & would be durable but not sure whether they are breathable enough for you. The new Jack Wolfskin Texapore 02 fabric gets very good MVTR (Moisture Vapour Transmission Rate=breathability) ratings but haven’t yet tried it myself & is same price as Event or Gore-Tex."
We hope that answers your questions without bombarding you with technology. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask...

Happy adventures

The team @ Cotswold Outdoor

Hi there,

I'm currently in the process of replacing all my outdoor gear (2 years as an outdoor activities instructor has hit it hard), starting with the jacket. Previously a GORE-TEX faithful, this time round I have been researching other options. The question is, what are the minimum hydrostatic head/water column and breathability ratings that will keep me dry on a week or so's walking expedition in potentially any weather, including also using my jacket as a waterproof rug to sit on? (I know, I'm not kind to them!) I've switched to an office job now so this will sadly be more the exception than the rule...but I want to be confident in my gear, nonetheless.

I've been looking at Jack Wolfskin, as I like their styling, but all the jackets I like seem to be rated at only 6,000mm water column and 9,000 MVTR (e.g. TEXAPORE TASLAN 2L, TEXAPORE TASLITE 2L) and, having been spoilt with GORE-TEX's extremely high spec, I have no concept of whether or not this is sufficient... Is it going to leak in a storm or leave me soggy from sweat, or would it be absolutely fine?

Other materials I'm interested in the performance of are Sprayway's 'hydro-dry' (I really like Sprayway's hoods), Tog 24's 'MILATEX' and TNF's 'Hy-Vent'.

Any help gratefully received.

Hi Nick,

Sorry to hear about the dog! I'm assuming the mat you're referring to is the Mountain Equipment Helium 3.8? Unless you're enormously loyal to another brand or you want something really über-techie with very specific features, then yes, the Helium 3.8 is well worth going for. A good balance of pack size/weight/inflated size for a very favourable price. It's less than 100g heavier than the 2.5 but is half as thick again so for the extra cushioning and warmth, it's an almost insignificant weight penalty.

Sweet dreams!

Jacob

While they layout of the two jackets is pretty similar (although the MH one has those fancy cuffs!), the Up Track is part of Marmot's 'M3' softshell range, which they recommend for faster paced activities and/or warmer conditions. The Mecurial is likely to be a warmer jacket with its fleece lining fabric. Next week in Snowdonia, you're probably going to want warmth, but in the long run, you need to consider which is going to be the more versatile for your sort of needs: you can always layer up on your trip to Wales.

Cheers,

Jacob

Hi

My old soft shell jacket has finally given up the ghost so I'm looking around for a new one for a trip to Snowdonia next week.

The Up Track from Marmot and Mecurial Jacket from Mountain Hardwear both seem to fit the bill in terms of what I'm looking for and, as they are in the sale, are also within a tight budget.

I'd be grateful for any advice / opinions on the pros / cons of each or indeed suitable alternatives.

Many thanks

Nick,

I would agree with many of Jacobs comments. I would add that there are a couple of fundamental differences between the Stretch Neo Shell and the Latok which it's worth being aware of.

The Latok is made from Event and will typically have a hydrostatic head of about 25 metres. It's a three layer style construction of jacket. This means the waterproof membrane is sandwiched between the hardwearing face fabric and the mesh liner. This creates a hardwearing, reliable shell jacket that breathes as well as this type of jacket can.

The Stretch Neoshell is made using a PU coating and has a hydro static head of about 10 metres. This is still very waterproof and for most people would be more than enough. It's also air permeable, this means that a small amount of air will pass through the fabric and this is in part what aids the breathability of the product and makes it far more comfortable than Gore-tex/Event. It's also a three layer construction but is less robust in nature than the Latok. In windy conditions you'll notice that you will be colder and due to the significantly improved breathability you may need to wear different clothing than you're used to with a Gore-Tex or Event jacket. You will find the same with the new Gore-Tex active shell.

In a nutshell the differences boil down to this...if you need a bombproof waterproof jacket that can take any amount of abuse I would go for the Latok. If breathability and comfort take precedence over durability I would go for the Stretch Neoshell.

I hope these ramblings are of some use.

Regards,

Patrick
